Skills, according to ◊ ACT-R, are built out of atomic units called production rules. A production rule is an if-then pattern that combines a condition with an action. Wertheimer’s parallelogram trick, for instance, could be described as the production rule, “IF the left side is congruent to the right side, THEN cut the shape and shift the right side to form a rectangle.”
